Forbidden City

The Forbidden City, probably Beijing’s most prominent landmark, is the former palace of the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties and is located in the heart of Beijing.

Tiananmen Square

Just opposite the front entrance to the Forbidden City is Tiananmen and its famous square, the world’s largest public square.  It encompasses significant historical icons, such as the Gate of Heavenly Peace, the Great Hall of the People and the China National Museum.

Temple of Heaven

This Taoist construction is located in southern Beijing and was built in 1420, during the reign of Emperor Yongle.  Comprising three main groups of constructions, the temple grounds cover 2.73 sq km of parkland and were built according to strict philosophical requirements.

Lama Temple

Also known as the Lamasery of Harmony and Peace, this site was originally built as an imperial palace on the orders of Emperor Kangxi in 1694 and completed as a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in 1744, the ninth year of the reign of Emperor Qianlong.
